SENDIASS support for Amy and her daughter

When Amy’s daughter was diagnosed with autism, she contacted SENDIASS Leicester for support and advice on applying for an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP). After the local authority agreed to an EHCP assessment, SENDIASS allocated support to Amy.

Someone to listen

SENDIASS met with Amy, offered advice and support to request an ECH assessment and about the overall process. We accompanied Amy to meetings with the local authority and provided “emotional support at times… someone to listen that understood!!”.

Ultimately the support and information that SENDIASS offered led to a fantastic outcome – Amy’s daughter now has a place at a school that can offer one-to-one support, as well as teaching valuable life skills like cooking:

The support they provide is crucial to parents in helping them achieve the best and most appropriate outcomes for their children. It is very difficult sometimes when as a parent you are so emotionally involved, so to have someone who can help you to have a voice and work with the local authority is so important.

Invaluable support

Amy was so happy with the “invaluable” support she received from SENDIASS Leicester that she will be coming back to volunteer for the team in the next academic year:

Although I could have gone through the EHCP process without the support it would have been harder and even more stressful. I felt that I could provide that same support to other parents and that is what I would like to be able to do.
